Birch Design Lab

About

Birch — Old English beorc, from a root that meant to shine: the same ancient syllable that gave us bright. The birch is the shining tree — white against the dark wood, first to return after fire, the threshold tree of the north.

Two facts about the tree

First: birch is a pioneer species. After a burn it arrives before anything else, stabilizes the ruined ground, and makes the forest possible again.

Second: birch bark is the oldest paper of the north. The medieval letters dug out of Novgorod's mud — shopping lists, love notes, a child's homework — were scratched into birch bark and survived eight hundred years. The shining tree is also the tree you could write on: the original carrier of everyday human messages.

For a business that builds the surfaces where small companies speak to the world, that is not decoration. That is the job description, growing in the yard.

The founder

Birch Design Lab is one person — a builder of websites and software who happens to resemble the namesake: tall, pale, and better suited to the north than to the Gulf Coast he currently calls home. Every project here is designed, built, and cared for by the same pair of hands you shake.

First green after the fire — and the bark you write on.
